Strasbourg / Brussels – The feminist and Kremlin-critical punk band Pussy Riot is one of the eight candidates who were nominated on Tuesday for this year’s “Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought”, announced the EU Parliament today. The Sakharov Prize is awarded for commitment to human rights and democracy. The Members of European Parliament (MEPs) criticize sharply intimidation of the Russian opposition. MEPs are “deeply disappointed with the verdict and the disproportionate sentence” against the punk band Pussy Riot. The sentencing of the three women to prison was a “politically motivated intimidation of opposition activists”, they state in a resolution and hope the sentence will be reviewed and reversed in line with Russia’s international commitments.
