On November 14th a general strike and solidarity day against Troika and austerity politics will take place in various countries of the European Union. Protest movements called for European solidarity. First, Portugal and Spain called for a general strike on November 14th (#14N). The Greek trade unions, as well as Malta and Cyprus also followed the call. At the same time, the European Trade Union Confederation ETUC has declared this day as European Action and Solidarity Day. “The ETUC strongly opposes the austerity measures which are plunging Europe into economic stagnation, recession, and dismantling the European social model. These measures, far from restoring confidence, are only aggravating imbalances and creating injustices,” the ETUC say in their declaration.
In Spain, the Coordinadora25s together with participationg platforms say in their statement on the general strike #14N; “We want to take the strike as a strike against the debt, to keep saying that we do not owe not and we will not pay, we want to deepen the dismissing process against the government and the constitutional process for a democracy to stop austerity policies at European level.” They launched a new page for the event “TomaLaHuelga“. In Italy, and even in the UK is a debate to join the calls to action of the European Trade Union Confederation to join. In Germany the Solidaritätsbündnis and Blockupy activists call for solidarity with Southern countries of Europe as they will suffer from new austerity policies in 2013.
